When I first moved to the Urbana-Champaign twin cities, I had no idea there would be such an active maker community.
One of the driving organizations of the maker community (among others) is the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center. The UCIMC is located in downtown Urbana, Illinois and will be celebrating its 15th anniversary the weekend of October 9-11.
“For these 15 years, we have used media to transform policy, shipped over 100,000 books to prisoners, published over 225 editions of the public i, raised a radio tower, provided support and a venue to thousands of artists, have a thriving Makerspace, and have incubated a Bike Cooperative and hundreds of local and international projects.”
On top of their 15th anniversary, the Urbana Makerspace (the thriving makerspace mentioned above), will be hosting their annual Heartland Maker Fest on October 3rd.
If you’ll be in the Champaign-Urbana-Savoy area either of the next two weekends, I hope to see you at the festivities for the Urbana Makerspace and the UCIMC!
